Podiatry and Chiropody at Alternatives.
Podiatry is the new term used for chiropody. Podiatry comes from the Greek word `pod` meaning `foot` and `iatry` meaning `therapy`. This change in terminology reflects the wider scope of practice now carried out by a podiatrist including minor surgery and musculo-skeletal assessment of the lower limbs. Whilst focussing on the feet, a Podiatrist will take a holistic approach as many common problems such as back, hip and knee pain are often caused by the way we walk.
For those requiring it a 45 minute musculo-skeletal assessment will check for range and quality of motion in the lower limb as well as leg length difference, and foot biomechanics during walking. Other specific problems such as those of a paediatric or sports injuries nature can also be diagnosed.
From the findings of the assessment, a treatment plan is devised which often includes stretching exercises along with therapies, and ultimately customised orthotics if indicated to restore foot function.

He is registered with the Health Professions Council (this replaces State Registered) and holds certificates in local anaesthesia, acupuncture and x-ray (Popument Course 1996)
